Decimals

What are Decimals?

Decimals are a way of writing numbers that are not whole numbers. They use a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the fractional part.

42.375

Whole number part: 42

Decimal point: .

Fractional part: 375

Decimals represent parts of a whole. The digits to the right of the decimal point represent tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on.

Place Value in Decimals

Each position in a decimal number has a specific value, just like in whole numbers. The position of a digit determines its value.

The number 123.456 has a value of 100 + 20 + 3 + 0.4 + 0.05 + 0.006 = 123.456

Decimal Operations

+Adding Decimals

To add decimals, line up the decimal points and add as you would with whole numbers.

  23.45
+  7.82
31.27

-Subtracting Decimals

To subtract decimals, line up the decimal points and subtract as you would with whole numbers.

  23.45
-  7.82
15.63

×Multiplying Decimals

To multiply decimals:
1. Multiply as if they were whole numbers.
2. Count the total number of decimal places in both factors.
3. Place the decimal point in the product so that it has the same number of decimal places as the total.

2.3 × 1.5
= 23 × 15 ÷ 100
= 345 ÷ 100
= 3.45

÷Dividing Decimals

To divide by a decimal:
1. Move the decimal point in the divisor to make it a whole number.
2. Move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places.
3. Divide as with whole numbers.
4. Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend.

4.5 ÷ 1.5
= 45 ÷ 15
= 3
